Many scientists think we are already in the final minute.

The current world population when this page was written was 6,946,022,238. But it is increasing steadily. You can see the population right NOW by clicking on the
WORLD POPULATION CLOCK.

At the current rate of population growth, the population doubling time is about 50 years.

We can't be sure how many people can live on the earth, with enough food to eat and places to live. We do know, however, that Global Climate Change is affecting the total that the Earth can sustain.

If our growth rate stays the same, our population will double in about 50 years - probably during your lifetime.

There is a good chance that the bottle is already half full.

That doesn't leave us much time.

There are no other bottles.

Would finding more worlds save us?

If we could find three more planets we could get to, would that solve all our problems?

Question 3: How long can the growth continue as a result of the discovery of 3 new planets, thus quadrupling the current resources?

Earth in a beaker Answer:

11:59 Bottle (or planet Earth) is half full
12:00 Bottle #1 (or planet Earth) is full
12:01 Bottles 1 and 2 (or planet Earth plus one new planet) are full
12:02 All 4 are filled and once again we are at the end of the line.

You don’t need any more arithmetic than this to understand that the things we hear from many of the news stories, the politicians, and the energy resource moguls telling us we have lots of time, lots of fuel, lots of space in which continue to expand, are complete nonsense. Either they are ignorant of the math, or they are deliberately misleading us.

Don’t believe any prediction you see in the media until you check the math. The more optimistic the prediction, the greater is the probability that it is based on faulty arithmetic or no arithmetic at all.

We need to educate everyone about what “growth” actually means, especially in terms of population, and in terms of rates of use of the earth’s finite resources. We must educate people to recognize the fact that growth of populations and growth of rates of consumption of resources cannot be sustained.

We need to teach the world that "growth" should no longer be considered a measure of success - "Sustainability" must become the new measure of success. ...read more
